  • The purpose of this experiment is to use aluminum from an aluminum can to synthesize a chemical compound. alum. which is hydrated potassium aluminum sulfate. KAl (SO4) 2•12 H2O. Aluminum beverage cans generally have a thin coating of plastic on the inside that protects the aluminum from the corrosive action of the chemicals in the beverage.
  • Notes Lab report on synthesis of Alum using Aluminum. 1. Purpose: In this experiment. you will be converting the aluminum metal from a beverage can into the chemical compound potassium aluminum sulfate. KAl (SO4) 2•12 H2O. commonly referred to as alum.
  • SYNTHESIS OF ALUM Purpose: In this lab you are going to carry out a series of reactions to transform a piece of aluminum foil into white crystals (alum). You will use stoichiometry to figure out the limiting reagents and yield for your reaction.
  • The goal of this experiment is to convert the Al in a beverage can into Alum KAl (SO 4) 2. 12H 2 O (s). The reaction is done in two stages. Stage 1: Addition of KOH to dissolve the aluminum sample
  • Exp 6 (Intro) Synthesis of Alum Rev. 12/2015 INTRODUCTION In this experiment we will synthesize potassium aluminum sulfate dodecahydrate (KAl (SO 4) 2 •12H 2 O) from solid aluminum. From the experimental results it is possible to calculate the % yield of this reaction. BACKGROUND The reaction to form Alum from aluminum takes place in the following steps 2Al (s) + 2KOH (aq) + 6H 2 O (l) → 2KAl (OH)
  • The following sequential reactions take place in this experiment to synthesize alum (KAl (SO 4) 2 * 12H 2 O) : This synthesis demonstrates the aluminum hydroxide’s ability to act amphoterically. Amphoterism describes a substance’s ability to act as both an acid and as a base.
  • Alums are ionic compounds that crystalize from so lutions containing sulfate ions. a cation with a positive 3 charges (trivalent cation). and cations with a positive 1 charge (monovalent cation). Water molecules bind tightly with the tr ivalent metal ion and the remaining water molecules
  • The first step in this synthesis. which you will perform during Week 1. is to react metallic aluminum with a concentrated solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) to form the potassium salt of the tetrahydroxoaluminate complex ion. [Al (OH) 4]–. The balanced chemical equation for this oxidation-reduction reaction is
